1. The
Beginning : Once Upon A Time : Epilogue Reprise Entire Ensemble.
Main thematic motifs sung in a dense polyphony.
2. Which
Little Girl Named Rose
Rose 2 remains tacit during this Trio as Rose 1 ponders her identity,
Rose 3 contemplates climbing a tall mountain in the distance, and Willie
chooses a lion from all the wild animals at the menagerie.
3. How
Many Minutes Go Around To Make a Second
Rose 2 and Willie sing a fractured love duet as Willie continues to deal
with the lion in the Rose 1 narrative thread. Chorus 3 questions the attributes
of time.
4. Bringing
Billie Back Again
The first time we get a true sense of Willie struggling between two separate
narrative threads. In thread 1 Willie is choosing Billie the lion for
the first time, while in thread 2 Willie is ³bringing Billie back² after
Rose 2 has returned the lion to him. Chorus 3 continues to narrate Rose
3¹s ascent up the mountain.
5. Her
Favorite Color Was Blue (Waterfall 1)
Rose
1 tries to convince herself that the world is not round, but she can¹t
get Billie the lion out of her head. Rose 2 is deciding which chair to
bring up the mountain as Rose 3 arrives at a waterfall on the mountain.
6. Billie
Is Going Back To Willie
Rose 1 attempts to return Billie the lion to Willie. Rose 2 is now ascending
the mountain and panics as her chair gets stuck in the thick undergrowth
of the woods. A frightened Rose 3 runs away from the waterfall.
7. Devil,
Devil, Devil (Waterfall 2)
Rose 1, 2 and 3 are now all in the woods. Rose 1 thinks about Willie,
falls asleep, wakes up and continues climbing. Rose 2 arrives at the waterfall,
goes behind the water and sees ³Devil, Devil, Devil² written three times.
Rose 3 sings and cries to soothe the loneliness and fear of being by herself
in the woods.
8. Rose
Is A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose (Waterfall 3)
The centerpiece of the opera in which Rose 3 carves her name around the
trunk of a tree to create the famous Steinian mantra ³Rose is a Rose is
a Rose.² Rose 1 arrives at the waterfall and becomes terrified as she
sees ³Devil, Devil, Devil² written there, while Rose 2 sings and cries
alone in the woods.
9. Where
is There
Roses 3, 2, and 1 arrive sequentially ³there² at the mountain top, where
they sit and begin the trio ³Here I am...²
10. Finale
- O Will O Will (or A Little Boy Upon A Hill, or A Light)
The opera¹s soaring Finale finds each Rose sitting ³there² in the darkness
at the mountain top. Suddenly a wondrous searchlight pierces the night
sky from an adjacent peak and illuminates the Roses. Willie, who has evidently
been on a parallel journey, controls the distant beacon. At this moment
all three narratives unite as the Roses and their Echo Choruses sing in
lush harmony for the first time. Following this, the Bicycle Man delivers
the only spoken dialogue in the opera, which is a fairy tale account of
Rose and Willie¹s future. Once he finishes the epilogue, the three Rose¹s
splinter again into separate narratives as the entire ensemble sings many
of the opera¹s major
thematic motifs in a dense polyphony with Willie caught in the middle.
